Do I have Medical Condition that Affects My Bone Health?

I pose this question in this post within the context of another in which I considered the question- Could back pain be caused by a fracture? In that post we learned that it’s possible, but unlikely that back pain is caused by a fracture. In active, sporty children and teenagers, back pain might be an indicator of a stress fracture (a kind of overuse injury). We also mentioned that some medical conditions might affect one’s bone health in a manner that leads to a susceptibility to fracture (and subsequent back pain).

So is your back pain the product of a fracture that is derived from a disease that is affecting your bone health? Probably not. But it is still worth considering that although rare the onset of back pain can be an indicator of underlying serious disease. Some conditions that can affect bone health and increase the risk of fracture within the spine.

This list is not exhaustive. I would urge readers to avoid equating the absence of the three conditions above with the absence of a disease that affects bone health. I would encourage readers to follow the links above and learn about these conditions particularly osteoporosis, which is the condition that is most modifiable with lifestyle and activity modifications.

Differentiating back pain caused by an underlying bone disease from other relatively benign conditions is complex and requires a more individualised and thorough assessment of one’s symptoms than can be described in a generalised post. Typically though, if a patient complains of pain that is “non-mechanical” in nature… that is to say, pain that doesn’t fit a typical musculoskeletal pattern, we need to think about whether there is more sinister pathology at play.
