I've been enjoying life in Coogee since setting up Coogee Bay Physio in 2015. I’ve been working in a private practice, outpatient Physiotherapy setting for 18 years.
I have a varied clinical interest and specialised skills for rehabilitating orthopaedic surgery cases, chronic neck and back problems, sports injuries, osteoarthritis management, whiplash injury and workplace injuries.
I’m a regular runner along the Coogee to Bondi coastal path. I also enjoy swimming laps across the bay and playing tennis with the kids.
I love spending time in my garage on woodworking projects (currently working on a home made Pilates Reformer). I am also a terrible guitarist. I’m a husband, and proud Dad to three kids 6, 8 and 11 years old

My name is Martjie and as you might be able to tell by my name I grew up in South Africa, but I have also spent some time living in regional New South Wales. My interest in musculoskeletal rehabilitation stemmed from my own personal experiences with sports injuries growing up. This naturally lead to me to complete studies in Exercise Physiology and Physiotherapy.
Since graduating I have worked in hospitals and private practice, with a range of patient populations. I have found it particularly rewarding working with patients with longstanding pain problems. I enjoy learning about my patients goals, and tailoring a rehabilitation plan to achieve them. The fields of Physiotherapy and Exercise Physiology are continuously growing and I’m passionate about staying up to date, translating and applying the current research in to my clinical practice.
In my spare time I enjoy playing hockey, reading a good book, going bushwalking or camping.

We ask about activities that worsen or improve your symptoms. Knowing how your symptoms respond to certain activities allows us to create a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
The best treatment outcomes are achieved when we identify and help you adjust the intensity, frequency, and duration of movement habits or activities that might be causing your symptoms. We always consider:
Load Intensity: The level of stress placed on the body by the activity.
Load Frequency: How often the activity is done.
Load Duration: How long the activity lasts.

Joint mobilisation techniques improve mobility, and decrease pain. This builds confidence when returning to physical activities that involve specific joint areas in the body.
These techniques help shift the joint from a "protective" to a "relaxed" state, encouraging easier movement and improved circulation in joint tissues, muscles, and nerves. This lays the groundwork for reducing pain and other symptoms.

We integrate massage into our Physiotherapy treatments, particularly in the early stages. Massage effectively relieves tension, stiffness, restricted mobility, and pain.
While massage can be firm or intense, it doesn't have to be painful to be helpful. In addition to being a crucial part of your Physiotherapy plan, we also offer massage services for:
Promoting relaxation and overall well-being
Pre and post-sports performance improvement
Managing daily discomforts like tightness and minor aches
-
We couple our massage and manual therapy interventions with "active" alternatives that empower you to manage your symptoms independently, should the need or preference arise. These include:
Static stretching
Dynamic stretching
Self-Mobilisation

Gradually increasing strength and conditioning is essential for rehabilitation. We make sure you develop the right amount of strength and control based on where you are in your recovery process. Our aim is to carefully map out your improvement so that by the end of treatment, you not only reach but exceed your previous level of function. This ensures you're fully ready to resume not only your everyday tasks, but also your work and sporting activities too.
If you’re unsure of whether our Physiotherapy services are right for you, please feel free to call us. We can discuss your situation and help you decide what to do next.
